Every state has their own nuances when it comes to registering to vote. Some are automatic when you do things like get a drivers license. No matter what, you should take an active role in ensuring that you are eligible and registered to vote. A great resource for this is VOTE411.org. From there you can get information on registration, ballot information, and much more!
Educate Yourself
Once you are registered, check your ballot and see who is on there. Depending on the election cycle it will range from a Presidential candidate all the way down to school board seats. Do not discount the importance of these local elections. They can have just as much impact on your daily life as a Presidential election. Take note of the candidates, look them up, make an informed decision.
Show Up and Follow Through
This last step is the most important! Americans have a pretty poor overall turnout rate so anything you can do to make sure that not only you have a plan to vote, but also your family, friends, and everyone else! Pick up strangers on the way to your polling stations! Ok..be careful with that last one.
As your window to cast a vote nears, confirm that your registration is still valid. Double check your polling location and times. Bring a book or something to keep you occupied in case there is a long line.
